This is my first ever blog and I'm not a huge fan of writing so please bare with me, I promise it will eventually get better. This is mainly going to be about my journey of learning Brazilian Jui-Jitsu which I just started 3 weeks ago but I am loving every minute I'm on the mats. I guess I could start by telling how I got the idea to train BJJ so here it goes
Ever since I was a kid and saw my friends Taekwondo classes when I was 7 I wanted to take some sort of martial arts class unfortunately, my parents said no :( Finally now that I am 24 I finally got the chance to try some classes while I was living in England. In November 2011 they started offering free MMA classes on the base I was at so I joined those as soon as I found out. The classes were only twice a week but they were taught by a British MMA fighter and a few of his students from his gym. He was a Carlson Gracie brown belt so a lot of the classes were spent teaching us BJJ moves which other than on UFC fights I never really heard of it but I knew I liked it. When we found out that we were going to be moving to California I was mad it was about the farthest from where we wanted to end up but since the Air Force is apparently a small world one of my good friends there actually used to be stationed where we were headed to and still had some friends here. She also used to to BJJ and encouraged me to try it and luckily enough one of her friends just happened to have a BJJ academy.
I think this is enough rambling for tonight but I will post about the test tomorrow well actually now that is is 6:30 am its technically today and that also means I should go to bed.
Cool: I look forward to reading the rest of your thoughts on BJJ. :)
ReplyDeleteYou definitely landed on your feet if you're keen on jiu jitsu and moved out to California. That's arguably the best place for BJJ outside of Brazil (or even including Brazil, if you consider all the incredible instructors based in CA now).
I was lucky enough to visit the Golden State recently, but I'd love to go back some time.
Thanks for reading! I never thought anyone else would so I guess I should start updating this again :)
DeleteCool! That's one of the main reasons I make a point of commenting on other BJJ blogs: if blogs don't get many comments, it's easy to feel like nobody is reading and then lose the motivation to write as a result. So, definitely keep updating! :D
ReplyDeleteI think it's also beneficial to read other blogs and comment on them too (I'm sure you already do this, but I have a big list of BJJ blogs here, in case you don't read many yet). I love the way BJJ blogs have grown into a supportive community, to the extent that I can literally fly out to visit other bloggers in person and have an awesome time training with them. :D
